So, 2019 is here already and , as is typical of this period, a number of people already started scribbling down their list of New Year’s Resolution. (Do you have anything written down yet?) This is a great time to reset in preparation for a new start. In the light of that, I’ve come up with 5 actions that I believe will help you make 2019 an awesome year indeed.
By the way it is strongly recommend that you block off some time to do this exercise.
Here are the 5 actions:
1. Do a performance evaluation for 2018
Looking at 2018, how did you do?
- What were your accomplishments? (Maybe you lost X lbs as intended and got the body you’d dreamed of. Or you finally completed that big, scary project, etc)
- Were there goals you didn’t achieve? (Perhaps you didn’t hit that income target or reach your savings goals, etc)
- What habits served you fantastically well and which ones wrecked your joy?
These questions will give you an idea of where you’re with respect to your life’s objectives and what kind of goals you need to set for the new year.
2. List the things to change in 2019
There is a saying that whatever you don’t hate, you tolerate and whatever you tolerate you won’t change. So, what are those things in your life right now that you’re just mad about? Maybe you’re dissatisfied with your job, income level, house, or something else. Well then 2019 is the year you change all those. When you’ve sincerely discovered what those things are then you’ve got your 2019 goals/visions which you MUST then write down. Studies have shown time and time again that those who write down their goals achieve more in life than those who don’t. (See article on SMART goals to help with this step.)
Apart from that, remind yourself of the importance of achieving those goals/visions ; in short, know your ‘Why’ (i.e. compelling reasons why you must attain those goals) .
3. Strategize and plan
A goal without a plan, someone once said, is just a wish. So, once you’ve written down your SMART goals the next step is to devise plans and strategies to make them happen. This will force you to break down the goals into smaller, manageable chunks which will help you see how achievable those big goals are. For example, if you plan on losing 30 lbs by the end of 2019, you can break that down to 2.5 lbs per month (i.e. 30/12) and even further to approximately 0.63 lbs per week (i.e. 2.5/4) and so on to the days. Doing this smaller chunks consistently will help you develop the positive habits you require to attain your end goals.
4. Keep the goals/visions always before you
It’s one thing to set goals, and it’s another to thing to stay consistent pursuing those goals. You may start going to the gym in the new year, but then after a few weeks (maybe even days), you become that ghost gym member. Here is where you need some form of accountability – first to yourself and then to someone else. Commit yourself to your written goals, recite them daily (practice declarations and visualization daily) and keep reminding yourself of your ‘Why’ . You will most likely also want to tag a friend or two to hold you accountable as this is a very powerful force.
5. Execute the plans massively
You’ve written down your goals, you’ve crafted your plans and so the distance between the two is the execution. Develop a sense of urgency; execute all the necessary actions, fire all the shots, grab all the opportunities because you miss all the shots you don’t take and forfeit the prospects you let slip away. If a plan doesn’t work, then draft out a different one, but no matter what you do, never give up because if you do, you lost all the possibilities of bringing those dreams of your to reality.
Whatever goals you’ve set for yourself, ensure that they match your potential not your circumstance; don’t settle for less than you’re capable of (if needed dramatically increase them) . Remember that the only limits that exist are those you’ve set for yourself.
You may have set goals in the areas of personal, business, and sales successes…
here are first-class programs that can help you get there.
What are some of your goals in 2019!
To an awesome 2019!
