Contributing towards students’ success

“Our most important legacy will be the contributions we make to the lives of other human beings.” ~~ Thomas Kinkade

At university, I spent approximately 3.5 yrs (officially) mentoring students through a program I’d signed up for on campus. My interactions with the students involved helping them to create goals and devising strategies for them to accomplish those goals. It was always rewarding to hear their success stories afterwards. This experience intimated me with struggles and problems which students go through, a couple of which I had overcome and was very happy to help others with as well.

Fast forward to the time after graduation from university, I sought ways to help contribute to students’ success and to give back to the sets of students coming in after me. That was when I stumbled on the idea of writing a book which I believed would enable me reach out to a wider audience. And that was how the book project kicked off. Following that, I’d to survey a couple college and university students to find out their struggles, fears and dreams regarding their student life and their responses laid the direction in writing the book – “Be A High Achiever: Achieving all-round success in College & University” ( Paper Back | E-book). I also interviewed some faculty members and graduates who performed outstandingly well at school.

The book contains success tips from my experiences as a student as well as those of some other high-achieving students and is aimed to benefit current and future students at colleges and universities. These tips range from planning a successful school journey to selecting the right courses and program, setting SMART goals and formulating plans to bring the goals to fruition, time management, maintaining balance at school, getting involved in coop/internship and among many other tips that will enable students achieve success in the major areas of their school life and get them ready for the next phase of life after graduation.

What’s even more rewarding I’d say are the testimonials/reviews from readers of the book. And to crown it up, a couple of months after the book was launched on Amazon.ca, it made the Amazon bestseller list under the Student Life category.

I feel very privileged sharing my university experiences through this avenue, having encountered many blessings (e.g. the scholarships & recognitions), the hard times that steeled me up, the lovely people I’d met – friends, professors, faculty members, etc – who all made my time at Uni a memorable one worth writing about to help students pursue excellence.

What you share multiplies and what you withhold diminishes. That statement, I believe, is a source of motivation that will propel us to act on contributing toward causes we believe in and in this make lasting impact in the world around us. Truly, we were engineered not just to consume , but also to create and contribute to improve the lives of others.
